An entire channel dedicated to wine! Wine education, wine regions, wineries, winemakers and more can be found on Somm TV, the Please The Palate pick of the week!
I am a big tv watcher. It is not uncommon for me to have the television on in the background while I am working. Sometimes I have the news on, sometimes I have re-runs of old shows on, and recently I have had the Somm TV app open and watched a variety of shows that are available.
In 2013, the SOMM Series opened the exclusive world of the Master Sommelier exam to the public. It was such a popular film that two more films followed. Wine professionals and casual wine lovers alike were fascinated to get a view into a little known world. In fact, before the movie, many people likely never gave much thought to the studying done by sommeliers or other wine professionals.
SOMM TV launched in 2019 and today is available on all devices and smart TVs worldwide. There are original shows including Verticals, Blind Tasting Sessions, Cellar Stories, A Closer Look, Winery Tours, Sommelier’s Notebook, and educational content. In addition there is a library of wine and food movies, including A Year in Champagne, A Year in Burgundy, A Year in Port, and Bottle Shock.
I love learning about wine regions and I have the privilege in my work to typically travel to wine regions around the world. But with travel at a standstill this past year, watching many of the shows is an escape and lets me fantasize about traveling again.
I also love meeting winemakers and listening to their stories. I am lucky to say that I have a number of winemakers that I call friends. Through shows like Verticals, we can meet a winemaker and learn about their personal history through the vintages of wine that defined them.
In the series Drink A Bottle, watch two wine friends talk over wine. If you ever wanted to know what wine people talk about when they get together, here is your chance.
Watch harvest take place in different vineyards, watch sommeliers blind tasting wines, learn wine basics, and more. If you like wine, you will enjoy Somm TV and all the series and episodes it offers.
Time for me to watch another episode of Verticals!
