Please The Palate Wine of the Week: Saint Enzo 2024 Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro

Lambrusco is one of the most underrated wines out there. Far removed from the sweet, “nice on ice” styles of the ’70s and ’80s, Lambrusco is vibrant, food-friendly, and incredibly versatile, like the Saint Enzo’s 2024 Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro, the Please The Palate Wine of the Week.

About Lambrusco

Lambrusco is not a single grape but a family of native Italian varieties capable of producing sparkling red wines in styles ranging from dry to sweet. During my Italian wine studies, it became clear just how different these expressions can be. Sorbara tends to be lighter and more floral, Salamino deeper and more expressive, and Grasparossa the most structured and deeply colored of the group.

About Saint Enzo

Saint Enzo is a modern Lambrusco founded by husband-and-wife duo Armon and Myisha Moore, created to rethink how and when we celebrate. The California couple came up with the idea from a simple observation: while food culture has evolved, celebratory beverages (ie. sparkling wines) have largely stayed the same. Saint Enzo was developed to bridge the gap between sophistication without pretense and casual conversation.

The brand was six years in the making. Armon and Myisha traveled to Italy, visited vineyards, and began tasting lots of wine. They developed a long-term relationship with an Italian grower and began hands-on learning of production cycles. The name reflects both heritage and family: “Saint” acknowledges Lambrusco’s deep Italian roots, while “Enzo” honors the couple’s younger son. With a bold, contemporary bottle design and a clear point of view, Saint Enzo positions Lambrusco firmly in the present. Instead of being nostalgic about the past, Saint Enzo is a modern luxury wine meant to be opened and shared.

Tasting Notes

Saint Enzo’s L’Originale is produced entirely in Italy from organic Lambrusco Grasparossa grown in clay-rich soils among cherry orchards. Grasparossa is known for its darker fruit profile, firmer tannins, and richer texture, making it particularly well-suited to a focused, single-varietal expression. This sparkling wine is made in the traditional method, without additives or processing aids. It is a deep ruby color with persistent bubbles. The wine has beautiful aromas of dark cherry, red berries, and flowers, as well as savory notes. On the palate, the wine offers both structure and freshness.

Food Pairing

Saint Enzo Lambrusco is more than a celebratory wine; it is also a compelling wine with food. Its acidity and gentle tannic structure make it an excellent match for cured meats, fried foods, roasted vegetables, and brunch dishes. It also works well with richer fare, where the bubbles and freshness help cut through weight. I shared the wine with friends over a Thai dinner, and Saint Enzo paired well with the rich, spicy flavors.
