Please The Palate Wine of the Week: Gaudio Bricco Mondalino Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese “Gaudio” DOC 2018

I have said it before and I will say it again: I love Grignolino, the sexy, little-known wine from Piemonte, Italy. I swooned when I tasted the 2018 Gaudio Bricco Mondalino Grignolino del Monferrato “Gaudio” DOC and that is why it is the Please The Palate Wine of the Week.

The Gaudio family been making wine for three centuries and five generations. The winery Gaudio Bricco Mondalino was founded in 1973 in the province of Alessandria. The winery is focused on producing native varieties and Grignolino is an indigenous variety that in Italy is only grown in the region of Monferrato Casalese.

The Grignolino is sourced from three different plots which consist of white calcareous soils, fossilized seashells and marine deposits. The wine is a light ruby red color but don’t judge the wine by it’s pale color. It has beautiful aromatics of wild strawberry, raspberry, black cherry, pink grapefruit, red flowers and green pepper. On the palate, the wine is textured with an elegant finish.

The Gaudio Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese “Gaudio” DOC 2018 retails for approximately $30. Enjoy it chilled, enjoy it on a warm summer evening, enjoy it with Carne Crudo. No matter what, enjoy Grignolino!
