This week is National Prosecco Week. This nationwide campaign (July 19-25) is the official celebration of Prosecco DOC. So what better way to celebrate it than with Mionetto Prosecco and Pizza from Song e Napule in New York, the Please The Palate pick of the week.
Prosecco DOC is produced in northeastern Italy. Prosecco DOC includes nine provinces in two Italian regions, Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. It is a large area with more than 12,000 vineyards, 360 sparkling houses, and more than 600 million bottles produced each year.
Mionetto is one of the area’s oldest wine producers. It was founded in 1887 by winemaker Francesco Mionetto in Valdobbiadene. Today the company, Freixenet Mionetto USA, is led by CEO Enore Ceola who is credited with introducing Prosecco to the U.S. market. Mionetto was also the first Prosecco made from organically grown grapes and one of the first brands to launch Prosecco Rosé.
This year Mionetto is celebrating 25 years in the United States and as part of Prosecco week, they took over Song e Napule’s newest restaurant for a pizza and Prosecco party.
Song e Napule, which is Napoletano for “I am from Naples”, is owned by Ciro Iovine who has been a pizza chef since he was 13 years old. He opened his first location in the West Village in New York in 2005. He and his wife have since opened locations in the Upper West Side and Rutherford, New Jersey. And they opened their fourth and newest location on the same block as the first location in the West Village. The original location is like a “little den” with a few tables open to the street. The new location is a full restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating.
I love pairing pizza and Prosecco. And Song e Napule served two delicious Neapolitan pizzas specifically to pair with the Mionetto Prosecco.
One pizza was topped with zucchini and Prosecco chips.
Another pizza was topped with prosciutto and a Prosecco glaze.
We enjoyed a selection of Mionetto Proseccos, ranging from the Prosecco DOC Brut, Prosecco Rosé, Organic Prosecco DOC, Valdobiaddene, and Cartizze.
Prosecco Week is celebrated across the country but I am glad I got to celebrate in New York and will definitely return to Song e Napule for delicious, authentic Neapolitan pizza on my next visit!
