Please The Palate Pick of the Week: Osso Good Bone Broths

Each year as we look forward to the new year, something we aspire to is eating well. But eating healthily and eating clean is something we should do year round and now it is easy to do with Osso Good Bone Broths, the Please The Palate pick of the week. Bone Broth is a stock but so much more. Bone broth is made from animal bones and connective tissue that have been boiled into a broth and slowly simmered for 12 to 24 hours. Bone Broth is beneficial for a variety of health issues and is a source of protein, collagen and gelatin. The Osso Good Company was started by Meredith Cochran and two partners, Jazz Hilmer and Toran Hilmer. Originally from Wisconsin, Meredith was working in a hospital where the food was not fresh or organic when she realized that we should care about the food that we put into our bodies. After moving to San Francisco, she began studying Chinese medicine and that is when she was introduced to bone broth. In traditional Chinese medicine, bone broth is used as a digestive, as a blood builder and to strengthen the kidneys due to the high collagen content, anti-inflammatory amino acids, and healing compounds that can only be found in bones and connective tissue. Meredith and Jazz began making bone broth at home and then started selling it commercially. Demand grew and they were selling out until they built a large production facility in Fresno. They have been selling bone broths and paleo soups online for a few years but now Osso Good has their first brick and mortar store in West Hollywood.   Working with responsibly raised animals from small family farms in Northern California and Oregon, as well as organic vegetables and other products, Osso Good produces chicken, beef, turkey and pork bone broths, as well as the Signature Bone Broth which is a blend of all four. The bone broths are available served warm in the store, or you can buy frozen to take home (and the frozen bone broth will last 12 months in the freezer). The broths have no salt, so salt can be added to your personal liking. Other items that can be blended in include lemon, raw honey, ghee, cilantro, pasture-raised butter and coconut oil – all of which are organic. Osso Good also offers Paleo Soups made with the bone broths as the base. Flavors include Tomato Basil, Super Green, Thai Carrot, Roasted Beet and Butternut Squash. The Thai Carrot is rich and slightly sweet with a lovely curry finish; the tomato basil is a classic with fresh tomatoes and the super green tastes like cream of broccoli, without the cream. Like the plain bone broths, you can also blend in ingredients with the soups. But then there are the “Blendies”, a hot smoothie. Ingredients such as avocado, cilantro, celtic sea salt and hot sauce are blended into the signature bone broth for the Spicy Avocado Blendie. There is also the Broffee (signature bone broth, pasture-raised butter, cold brew coffee and celtic sea salt), Bulletproof (signature bone broth, pasture-raised butter and celtic sea salt) and Immune Boost (chicken bone broth, lemon, raw honey and sea salt). There are also cold Smoothies made with grass fed collagen powder. The Power Up is made with collagen powder, almond milk, coconut cream, bananas, peanut butter, sunflowers butter, coconut oil and sea salt. It is not only tasty but it is quite filling! There is also the Morning Fix (with collagen, cold brew coffee, coconut oil, MCT oil, banana, peanut butter, coconut cream and cacao) and Brain Fuel (with collagen, almond milk, peanut butter, sunflower butter, MCT oil, coconut oil, coconut cream, cacao, dates and sea salt). Not everything at Osso Good is in liquid form. There are also waffles. But, these are not just regular waffles. They are gluten-free and made with the signature bone broth. Made fresh to order, they can be eaten plain or topped with sweet or savory ingredients. Canadian (topped with pasture-raised butter, maple syrup and sea salt) and Mexican Mama (topped with pasture-raised butter, cinnamon and raw turbinado sugar) Hazel Is Nuts (topped with chocolate hazelnut butter, sliced bananas, whipped cream) California Love (topped with avocado, pine nuts, pickled red onions) Everything is so flavorful at Osso Good. And, no preservatives are used, nor are any processes that make products shelf-stable. It is just about clean, organic eating. So, whether you have a New Years Resolution to eat healthy or you enjoy it throughout the year, check out Osso Good and you will see why it is the Please The Palate pick of the week….and why I took some home to put in my freezer! The Osso Good Co.  8036 W. 3rd Street Los Angeles, 90048 Open Daily: 10:00am – 7:00pm
