As we start buying presents for our friends and family for the holidays, what do you get the wine lover? I know for me, the last thing I need is bottle of wine, a wine opener, or a wine glass. But a good wine book is always a joy to add to the collection, such as the new ON CALIFORNIA – From Napa to Nebbiolo…Wine Tales from The Golden State, the Please The Palate pick of the week.
On California is not another narrative about the California wine story nor is it about a specific region or a chronological history. Rather On California is a collection of short essays by some of the most well-regarded wine writers and winemakers. Each chapter has a general theme and the articles range from some recently written and others written in the 1970s and 1980s. Together, these stories share the journey of California wine.
On California was published by the Académie du Vin Library which was co-founded by Steven Spurrier, who died in March 2022. Spurrier was the host of the Judgment of Paris in 1976 where California’s triumph over the French was a huge boon to the California wine industry. Académie du Vin Library was founded by Spurrier and friends and is dedicated to publishing the finest wine writing of the past, the present, and the future.
There are stories from Hugh Johnson, Elin McCoy, Gerald Asher, Rex Pickett, Paul Draper, Liz Thach MW, Elaine Chukan Brown, Esther Mobley, Randall Grahm, Kelli White, Warren Winiarski, and more!
On California was released on October 5th, the birthday of Steven Spurrier. It retails for $45 and is available at https://academieduvinlibrary.com/, as well as Amazon.com.
