One year ago, Clifton's Cafeteria in Downtown LA reopened its doors. The 47,000-square-foot space, covering four floors, reopened with two (of five) bars and a cafeteria. For the last year, there has been anticipation about the opening of the other three bars - Shadow Box, Treetops and Pacific Seas. Well, anticipate no longer as one of those bars has officially opened. Welcome to Clifton's Pacific Seas Pacific Seas is Los Angeles' newest tiki bar. From top to bottom, this Polynesian themed bar is a tiki wonderland, circa 1940-1950. Everything about Clifton's is a bit surreal. The decor has a Disneyland-esq quality to it, from the taxidermy animals to the 40-foot tree that reaches three floors in the center of the atrium. And Pacific Seas is no exception.
Lamill Coffee, one of Los Angeles’ first hometown roasters, is a home-grown, family-owned business. Owner Craig Min grew up in the business, learning to roast coffee at twelve years of age. He took over the family business after college and started Lamill in 1997. You can find their coffee in restaurants and hotels in Southern California and beyond, as well as at their Silverlake location, opened in 2008. Recently, I got to go behind the scenes and tour their roasting facilities in Alhambra, just east of Downtown Los Angeles. lamill-coffee-1 John Martin, Director of Coffee at Lamill, greeted us that morning. Responsible for obtaining the raw coffee from around the world and overseeing the roasting, I asked him how one achieves the title "Director of Coffee." He explained that the coffee business in an old-school industry. There is no formal education and no certifications. Roasters start as apprentices and work their way up, learning as they go. That is what John did. He has been in the business for ten years and once he was bitten by the coffee bug, there was no turning back. He is fascinated with flavor and loves all the various tastes and is continually learning. john-martin-director-of-coffee-2 Behind the Scenes
This story originally appeared in California Winery Advisor. Carneros sits at the base of both Napa and Sonoma. In fact, Carneros is the only AVA in the United States that is located in two counties. With 8,000 acres planted, the majority of vines are planted on the Sonoma side. Carneros is a cool-climate appellation that is influenced by the San Francisco Bay. It is known for chardonnay, pinot noir and sparkling wine production. There are thirty wineries located in Carneros and here are six unique tasting experiences you can have to get to know the wines and the region. schug-7 Schug | 602 Bonneau Rd, Sonoma, CA 95476 Try their wine: Schug Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2014 Every winery has a story to tell. Sign up for a tour and tasting at Schug to learn its history. Schug was started by pinot noir pioneer Walter Schug in 1980. A third generation winemaker from Germany, where his father ran the first pinot noir estate, Shug was raised on pinot noir. He applied for an internship in Bakersfield and emigrated with his family in 1961. After working for Julian Gallo, Shug went to Joseph Phelps Winery in 1970 where he created the infamous Insignia. Shug started his own label in 1980 focusing on pinot noir, and in 1989 opened the winery that you can visit today.
I have never been a big sports fan so I have never had a loyalty to a team. Sure, as a child, I was a big fan of the Dodgers, specifically Steve Garvey, and slept in my number 6 t-shirt every night. But when I went to college at UC Santa Barbara, we voted off our football team my freshman year in lieu of raising tuition. Then, when I returned to Los Angeles after college, we lost the LA Rams. Since 1994, Los Angeles did not have a national football team and I really did not care. But this year, the LA Rams returned to Los Angeles and there is something special about that. A city like Los Angeles should have a football team and it is nice to have the team return that I grew up with. With their first season underway, most of the players came out recently for the Inaugural Taste of the NFL – Los Angeles Rams event at the Globe Theater at Universal Studios Hollywood. taste-of-the-nfl-los-angeles-rams-events-2016-42 Taste of the NFL is a national organization where the country's top chefs and the NFL's greatest players raise money in support of food banks across the United States. Taste of the NFL - Los Angeles Rams event was hosted by the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. With one in seven people in Los Angeles County experiencing food insecurity, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank is fighting to end hunger in our community. Since 1973, they have been sourcing food and other products and distributing them to needy people through charitable agencies or directly through programs and have distributed more than 1 billion pounds of food.
