Who does not like french fries? What’s not to love about the perfect salty snack that can be enjoyed anytime!? There are steak fries, shoestring fries, curly fries, crinkle fries and so many other shapes and sizes. Fries can be salted or spiced. They can be served as a side dish or poutin. Fries can be dipped in ketchup, bbq sauce, ranch dressing, truffle aioli, vineagar and more. I thought I had seen it all until I enjoyed a french fry smorgasbord that was pure french fry madness. And where was this? At Fry Madness in downtown Los Angeles.
It is fair to assume that Fry Madness is a fast casual restaurant where you might order at the counter and take a seat. But, Fry Madness, a small restaurant with approximately 20 seats, is a full-service restaurant. Take a seat and the server will give a menu and then take your orders. The only catch is that every single thing on the menu is french fries!
The main menu is a selection of french fries with familiar toppings. Think of pizza, such as Hawaiin BBQ Chicken or Pepperoni, or sandwiches, such as pastrami or gyro, or tacos, such as carne asada. Or what about favorite bar food appetizers, such as corn elote or buffalo chicken. Now remove the pizza crust, the bread or the taco shell and put those toppings on top of french fries. Now you have Fry Madness.
Hawaiian BBQ Chicken Fries is a blend of french fries and sweet potato fries topped with house-made BBQ sauce, house-marinated chicken breast, pineapple and mozzarella cheese.
Farmers Fries are french fries topped with blistered pepper, onion, mushroom, melted mozzarella cheese, and house made avo verde sauce.
Gyros Fries are french fries topped with melted cheddar blend, beef and lamb gyros, tomato, onion and sriracha aioli.
Loco Asada Fries are french fries topped with cotija cheese, pepper jack cheese, cilantro, asada meat and house made avo verde sauce.
Pastrami Fries are french fries topped with house-made hot sauce, pepper corned beef pastrami, melted mixed cheese and sriracha aoili.
There is a lot of melted cheese on each of the fries and you will want to dive in pretty quickly while the cheese is hot. But you have to dive under the top layer of cheese and fries to find all of the other toppings. All of the fries we ordered were quite tasty but they also had quite amount of heat. If you are not big on spicy food, you may want to suggest going light on the sauces. One of the favorites of our selections was the Hawaiian BBQ Chicken Fries. The blend of the two differed potatoes and the sweetness of the BBQ sauce was quite addictive.
One of the most important things about Fry Madness are the fries. If the fries are not good, then it does not matter what toppings you throw on top. And, the fries are very good! They are crispy on the outside and well-salted. If you do not want to go all out with one of the main menu items, you can order a side of fries. While they have Truffle Fries, Garlic Parmesan Fries, Buffalo Ranch Fries and Spicy BBQ Ranch Fries, I would definitely recommend the Float Fries. Here you get to choose four sauces from the menu and the fries are served in glasses. We selected Truffle Aioli, Lemon Basil Aioli, Pesto Aioli and Chipotle Ketchup. The Pesto Aioli and Chipotle Ketchup were my favorites and this is definitely what I would order if I went back (since I could actually finish the Float Fries on my own).
Just when you thought you had seen it all, there are the Dessert Fries. The Dessert Fries are sweet potato fries with different toppings. Think sweet crepes but instead the sweet potato fries are crispy and have enough sweetness to stand up to the toppings.
Smores Fries are sweet potato fries topped with brownie pieces, torched marshmallow and caramelized banana.
Nutella Fries are sweet potato fries topped with Nutella, fresh slices banana and strawberries.
It would be hard to pick a favorite but I am a bit more partial to the Smores Fries. For both orders, we added whipped cream but I would prefer ice cream on top. However, Fry Madness does not allow add-ons so next time, I will try the Ice Cream Fries with sweet potato fries topped with chocolate sauce, brownie pieces and vanilla ice cream.
If you want to indulge in Fry Madness, as I did, head there with a group of friends….it is definitely a fun and causal dining adventure with friends.
Next time I find myself in downtown LA late at night, I know where I am heading – Fry Madness!
