Healthy, Flavorful Seafood and Coffee at The Joint Eatery

A sustainable seafood market, a restaurant and a coffee shop do not seem like the likeliest of combinations, especially in a location like the San Fernando Valley. But sitting on Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, The Joint Eatery is just that. Open since the summer of 2018, The Joint Eatery sits on the south side of Ventura Blvd, just west of Woodman Ave. The space is quite large and bright with long wooden tables for communal seating. The coffee bar and counter where you order the food is in the back left corner of the open space. On the right side of the space, separated by a partial wall, is the seafood market, featuring fresh fish and shellfish sourced from around the world, as well as dry-aged fish, a specialty of The Joint Eatery. The Joint Eatery has a unique dry-aging process that brings out the flavors and textures of the fish. This fish can be ordered to take home and cook or is available to eat onsite. The Joint Eatery offers a simple, succinct menu for dining in. The concept is fast-casual and you order your food at the counter and then it is brought to you. Appetizers include: Raw Oysters which can be ordered plain, with truffle ponzu sauce or with truffle ponzu sauce and caviar. Seared Scallops are perfectly cooked and served with shitake mushroom and topped with rich ponzu butter. Grilled Shrimp are large flavorful shrimp served with pico de gallo and micro cilantro. The Crab Cake is a large flat cake made with blue crab and topped with guacamole and masago (fish eggs). The main dish option is very simple. You select the fish you would like, either fresh or dry-aged, and you select if you want it pan seared or oven baked. Every piece of fish is cut and cooked to order and comes with two sides of your choice (honey-glazed carrots, fried rice, roasted kale, rosemary potatoes, garlic green beans or Parmesan asparagus).  The Joint Eatery has a nice little wine list and of course, you can order a coffee. Coffee and seafood may seem like an odd combination but The Joint Eatery offers a fresh, healthy, and flavorful option, whether you want to dine in or cook at home.
