Food

When you cannot stop thinking about a restaurant after you ate there, I would take that as a good sign. That happened after I drove to Silverlake to try Knuckle and Claw. After filling up to the point that I could eat no more, I went home only to obsessively think about the lobster and crab rolls for the next few days, wishing for more. Like the seafood, I have been hooked. Knuckle & Claw Knuckle and Claw is a charming little hole in the wall on Sunset Boulevard on the edge of Silver Lake and Echo Park that will transport you to Martha's Vineyard. Founded by Nikki Booth and Chloe Dahl, who is originally from Martha's Vineyard, they started with a booth (Chloe's Lobster Booth) at various farmers markets. With their stand-alone restaurant, they are packed nightly, with people dining at the counter that only has six seats, eating at one of the tables on the back patio or picking up take-out.
The Raymond in Pasadena is not a new place. In fact, it is rather old. Established in 1886, it was The Grand Raymond Hotel, frequented by East Coasters in the winter. The hotel no longer exists, but inside the original caretaker's cottage is the home of The Raymond Restaurant and 1886 Bar. The Raymond Tucked away and hidden by trees in a residential area of Pasadena, The Raymond and 1886 Bar are out of the way and hard to find. But, it is worth the effort to spend an evening here as you will immediately feel right at home in the cozy, intimate space. Owner Leslie Levy Owned by Leslie Levy and her husband, 1886 Bar has been drawing in cocktail lovers from around the city since it opened in 2010, as well as garnering awards for the cocktail program. A small, low lit bar filled with dining tables, there is not a lot of room to stand along the bar. But, if you can get a spot, you are in luck. Once you have settled in, get ready to do a little work. The cocktail menu is not for the lazy. Each drink is named after a literary reference and eloquently described in paragraph format, like reading a story. It is worth taking a moment to read through it but if you refuse, the bartender is happy to help you with suggestions.
Kurdish cuisine in Agoura Hills, California (Conejo Valley). I am sure there are two things giving you pause in that sentence. Kurdish food in Agoura Hills? Probably not the first thing that would come to your mind when you think of Agoura. Or maybe you are just thinking, what is Kurdish cuisine? Kurdish food was born in the mountains between Mesopotamia and Persia. The Kurds, an ancient people, can be found in Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Armenia and Georgia. The diversity in the food varies according to country where the Kurdish live, but in essence, it is Middle Eastern cuisine. There are aspects of Arab, Turkish, Armenian, Syria and Persian cuisine but Kurdish cuisine uses more fresh herbs, subtle spices and lots of vegetables. Niroj, pronounced "nirough" and meaning "new day", is located just off the 101 freeway at Reyes Adobe. Tucked in the back of a strip mall, next to a cleaners, dental office, hair salan, nail salan, Irish restaurant and a Kosher pizza place, a Kurdish restaurant is not what you would expect. Niroj Kurdish Cuisine Niroj is the only Kurdish restaurant in Southern California and the only Kurish fine dining in the entire Western part of USA. Opened February 2013, Niroj is the creation of Luqman Barwari, a Kurd originally from Iran. Barwari came to the US at the age of eighteen and worked as a molecular biologist for many years. He established his family in the Conejo Valley and when he was laid off from his job in the sciences, he began studying Kurdish cuisine. From 2006 to 2011, Barwari would go to the Kurdish area in the Southeast region of Turkey and immerse himself in the cuisine.
Remember playing spin the bottle as a child and wondering who the bottle would land on? Perhaps it was the person you had a crush on. Perhaps it was not. As grown-ups now, I like the idea of Spin the Bottle Wine Studio in Toluca Lake. You may never know what bottles will be open on the day that you go, but at least you can pick the bottle of wine you want try. Or let them pick the bottle for you! Spin The Bottle Wine Studio Spin The Bottle Wine Studio is owned by Doug LaGambina (partner/investor of Hollywood’s Wood & Vine) with partner Scott Kay (principal at Vine Street Partners and partner at Wood & Vine). It is a wine bar and retail shop that features a cultivated list of imported and domestic small production wines.
As the weather finally gets cold in Los Angeles, a hearty meal is in order. Messhall Kitchen in Los Feliz offers hearty comfort food with big flavors. From the outdoor fire pit to the wood cabin-like decor, and with servers in flannel shirts, you will feel the warmth the moment you walk in. You will also feel a sense of nostalgia. All of that comfort of your childhood, of camping or going to camp, will warm your heart as you take a seat in the family-friendly spacious restaurant. Chef Shane Pritchett came to Messhall Kitchen in 2014 and has brought his love for barbecue to the menu, while using local, sustainable and organic seasonal ingredients to create the re-conceptualized American favorites. Messhall Kitchen is the kind of restaurant that you want to come hungry....and thirsty. The drinks menu consists of classic cocktails, barrel aged cocktails and spirit flights. But, I was drawn to the drinks that are an ode to Harry Potter. As a huge fan of the books, we picked a Polyjuice Potion (151 rum, persimmon syrup, grapefruit, lemon, sherry float) under the Three Broomsticks Shaken Beverages section and a Veritaserum (Buffalo Trace bourbon, Mandarin Napoleon, maple syrup, barrel aged bitter) from the Hog's Head Stirred Libations section. The venerable Julian Cox has done it again. Along with his equally talented team, including Kristina Howald, Dave Kupchinsky, Nick Meyer, Eric Costantino and PJ Myers-Chase, they have put together one of the best new bars in Los Angeles, The Fiscal Agent. The Fiscal Agent Team - David Kupchinsky, Kristina Howald, Julian Cox, Eric Costantino, PJ Myers-Chase The Fiscal Agent is an intimate bar located above Barrel & Ashes in Studio City. There is no sign out front, but you will see the doorman standing just next to Barrel & Ashes. Despite having a doorman, there is nothing pretentious about The Fiscal Agent. It is warm and inviting with cool music playing. There is limited seating, with a handful of small tables and comfortable lounge chairs in what is like a living room. And the marble bar is like sitting at the kitchen counter, where you can watch the bartenders create drinks while chatting with them. The back bar is beautifully lit with a disco ball adding just the right amount of light.
