Cocktails

As the summer comes to an end, we think back to one of the most fun and quintessential Southern California events this summer: "Evening On The Beach". There is nothing better than dressing up, kicking off your shoes and sticking your feet in the sand. Evening on the Beach With wine glass in hand, a couple hundred guests attended the 5th annual "An Evening on the Beach" in support of St. Vincent Meals on Wheels of LA.
When my friend and pastry chef Marisa Churchill came to LA for a segment on The Talk, she told me that it was up to me to select where we ate. But, then she called and said she had one request - could we go to the new Barton G which opened on La Cienega. Why? Well, let's put it this way and see if this tune rings a bell....... "Come with me, and you'll be, in a world of pure imagination.
Take a look, And you'll see, Into your imagination.
We'll begin, with a spin, traveling in the world of my creation
What we'll see will defy explanation.
If you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it.
Anything you want to, do it.
Wanta change the world? There's nothing to it.
There is no life I know to compare with pure imagination
Living there, you'll be free, if you truly wish to be." Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is every child's dream. Who doesn't fantasize about walking through the candy fantasy land with rivers of chocolate and trees of gumdrops? At Barton G, this magical world comes to life, with a little twist ala Stanley Kubrick and Salvador Dali.
With the sun shining and National Tequila Day upon us, we combined the best of summer and clean, crisp blanco tequila to create some afternoon summer sippers. With all of the fresh fruit in the refrigerator, we played around and created two very refreshing drinks that were easy to make and even easier to drink! For our first cocktail, we muddled watermelon, mint and jalapeno and then added the juice of half of a lime, 2 oz of tequila and shook over ice and then strained into a glass. We opted not to add any additional sugar as the sweetness of the watermelon was just enough with the tartness of the lime and a hint of heat on the back. This drink was so light and refreshing that it was hard to believe it was alcoholic.
Formosa Cafe Interior (2) Formosa Cafe Interior (5) Sitting on Santa Monica Blvd, on the corner of Formosa Avenue, is the Formosa Cafe. Located in a former Red Car Trolley, the Formosa has been a Hollywood hangout and a Los Angeles icon for 75 years. My grandparents went there in the 1940s and 1950s and my parents hung out there in the 1960s. Formosa Then when the movie Swingers came out in 1996, suddenly it was the place to be for myself and my post-college friends. The long space with low lighting, red leather booths and celebrities photos hanging on every possible space on the wall was just like when my grandparents and parents would go there.

The Wallace Tucked among the busy Main Street in Culver City, sandwiched between Venice Blvd and Culver Blvd, is The Wallace. The restaurant concept may not be new, but former SBE corporate chef Michael Teich and his wife Carol are doing it well!
If you like scotch and you like oysters then this name has probably already gotten your attention. Located in Sherman Oaks, Tipple and Brine opened in April and is one of the many spots to brighten the Valley’s dining scene and entice those living in other parts of the city to fight the traffic to get there. It’s worth it! Rustic (reclaimed wood) but industrial (Edison lights), it’s a casual neighborhood restaurant and bar. Tipple and Brine Start with the signature item – oysters! Even better, do an oyster luge – eat an oyster, then pour some Scotch into the briny liquid left in the shell and slurp. Can’t chose a Scotch from the couple dozen options? They make it easy for you. For $8, they select the oyster and a 1 oz shot of Scotch that will best pair with it.
Harlowe There is always somewhere new to enjoy a drink in Los Angeles and one of the newest spots is Harlowe. But while Harlowe is new, it has an "old" feel. Harlowe Exterior Owned by the 1933 Group, Harlowe is another one of their bars (think Sassafras, Oldfield’s Liquor Room) that makes you feel like you have stepped back in time. Located in what used to be a nightclub, Harlowe was inspired by Hollywood's Golden Age and is filled with vintage decor, custom fixtures and original turn-of-the-century portraits on every wall. The oblong bar sits in the center of the room with a few tables scattered around the perimeter of the room and on the patio.
Is a night out dinner and a movie?  Or a movie followed by dinner?  What about dinner in the movie? I am not talking about sneaking in your take-out. I am talking about the luxury iPic Theater, that reopened the doors of the Avco movie theater on Wilshire and Westwood a few months ago.  And recently, Tanzy an Italian restaurant with outlets in Scottsdale and Boca Raton, opened within the theater. Tanzy and iPic Entrances When you enter the iPic theater, the box office is more like a concierge service at a hotel. You are then led to your theater and your assigned seats.
Copied!
