Cocktails

When you think of Jagermeister, does it bring you back to your college days? Or perhaps you secretly enjoy Jagermeister while on a ski trip in the cold of winter. Either way, you probably are embarrassed to admit that you enjoyed this licorice liqueur sometime in your past life. But, I am hear to tell you that you may want to rethink this. At Tales of the Cocktail this year, Jagermeister hosted a Spirited Dinner called Jägermeister’s Summer of Music Spirited Dinner at the Foundation Room at the New Orleans House of Blues. I was intrigued by the invitation. The dinner was limited to 56 guests, one for each of the 56 premium ingredients in Jägermeister’s secret recipe. Jagermeister is an amazing modifier in cocktails. Top bartenders Willy Shine, Sean Kenyon, Ivy Mix and Sean Hoard mixed up delicious cocktails using Jagermeister that paired perfectly with the dinner. We love wine but then, what’s not to love about wine? There are so many choices between varietals, regions and producers that you can never...

There really is no shortage of good food in New Orleans. Every year that I go to Tales of the Cocktail, the list of restaurants to try is endless. This year, Tales of the Cocktail created Tales Restaurant Week where restaurants around the city offered a special price-fixed tasting menu, along with a recommended spirit cocktail, but of course.  Tivoli & Lee Our restaurant week choice was Tivoli & Lee, a modern Southern bistro at the Hotel Modern, next to the bar Bellocq, in the central business district of New Orleans.
As the summer comes to an end, we think back to one of the most fun and quintessential Southern California events this summer: "Evening On The Beach". There is nothing better than dressing up, kicking off your shoes and sticking your feet in the sand. Evening on the Beach With wine glass in hand, a couple hundred guests attended the 5th annual "An Evening on the Beach" in support of St. Vincent Meals on Wheels of LA.
When my friend and pastry chef Marisa Churchill came to LA for a segment on The Talk, she told me that it was up to me to select where we ate. But, then she called and said she had one request - could we go to the new Barton G which opened on La Cienega. Why? Well, let's put it this way and see if this tune rings a bell....... "Come with me, and you'll be, in a world of pure imagination.
Take a look, And you'll see, Into your imagination.
We'll begin, with a spin, traveling in the world of my creation
What we'll see will defy explanation.
If you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it.
Anything you want to, do it.
Wanta change the world? There's nothing to it.
There is no life I know to compare with pure imagination
Living there, you'll be free, if you truly wish to be." Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is every child's dream. Who doesn't fantasize about walking through the candy fantasy land with rivers of chocolate and trees of gumdrops? At Barton G, this magical world comes to life, with a little twist ala Stanley Kubrick and Salvador Dali.
With the sun shining and National Tequila Day upon us, we combined the best of summer and clean, crisp blanco tequila to create some afternoon summer sippers. With all of the fresh fruit in the refrigerator, we played around and created two very refreshing drinks that were easy to make and even easier to drink! For our first cocktail, we muddled watermelon, mint and jalapeno and then added the juice of half of a lime, 2 oz of tequila and shook over ice and then strained into a glass. We opted not to add any additional sugar as the sweetness of the watermelon was just enough with the tartness of the lime and a hint of heat on the back. This drink was so light and refreshing that it was hard to believe it was alcoholic.
Formosa Cafe Interior (2) Formosa Cafe Interior (5) Sitting on Santa Monica Blvd, on the corner of Formosa Avenue, is the Formosa Cafe. Located in a former Red Car Trolley, the Formosa has been a Hollywood hangout and a Los Angeles icon for 75 years. My grandparents went there in the 1940s and 1950s and my parents hung out there in the 1960s. Formosa Then when the movie Swingers came out in 1996, suddenly it was the place to be for myself and my post-college friends. The long space with low lighting, red leather booths and celebrities photos hanging on every possible space on the wall was just like when my grandparents and parents would go there.

The Wallace Tucked among the busy Main Street in Culver City, sandwiched between Venice Blvd and Culver Blvd, is The Wallace. The restaurant concept may not be new, but former SBE corporate chef Michael Teich and his wife Carol are doing it well!
