Charleston, South Carolina is known for its history, well-preserved architecture and southern politeness. Condé Nast Traveler readers have voted Charleston the No. 1 U.S. City and the #2 in the World by Condé Nast Traveler 2014 Readers’ Choice Awards. There is a lot to see in this charming city. So, when I had only one night there, I wanted to seek out the best cocktails and found The Gin Joint.
As a Gin drinker, the name in itself drew me in. Featuring pre-Prohibition drink recipes, as well as some newer creations, The Gin Joint offers more than gin drinks, of course. But, we stuck with gin.
Monticello Mule – Greenhat Gin, Lemon, Pomegranate Molasses, Grenadine, Orgeat, Ginger Beer – Loved the play on a Gin Buck and the pomegranate molasses added a tart richess to the refreshing drink.
Waterloo Sunset – Voyager Gin, Lemon, Riesling, Strega, Cinnamon, Muddles Pear, Angostura – a perfect drink for the Fall season as it has refreshing elements tied in with the Summer and spices tied in with the Fall.
We arrived late at night, just before last call, so we only had time for these drinks. But, I would love to go back for Bartender’s Choice as they set it up just the way I like. I always say that instead of saying that you want dry or sweet or strong or light, find two descriptors that will really explain what you prefer. And, that is what they do on their menu. They list a series of words and ask you to choose two. This is a Bartender’s Choice that really wants to understand what you want and helps you find your words.
