13 Oct Please The Palate Wine of the Week: Stemmari 2019 Nero D’Avola Sicilia DOC
Nero d’Avola is the most widely planted red grape on the island of Sicily and beloved for its flavors, juicy acidity and soft tannins. As I sipped the Stemmari 2019 Nero D’Avola, I understood the popularity of this wine. And, at just $10.99, the Stemmari 2019 Nero D’Avola Sicilia DOC is the Please The Palate wine of the week.
Stemmari owns two estate vineyards along the coast of Sicily, one on the west side in Sambuca di Sicilia in the province of Agrigento and one in the south in Acate in the province of Ragusa. The clay soils are ideal for the Nero d’Avola.
The grapes are picked, fermented and spend 6 months in French barriques. The result is a deep ruby-red wine with dark fruit and brambly notes and a hint of baking spice. On the palate, the wine is youthful and easygoing with juicy acidity and soft tannins. This is a wine to enjoy with pasta or red meats. But, at $10.99, it is perfect to pair with a midweek pizza.
