22 Apr Please The Palate Wine of the Week: Domaine Bousquet 2021 Gaia Malbec, Gualtallary, Uco Valley, Argentina
At a recent gathering to celebrate World Malbec Day, hosted by the Consulate General of Los Angeles at Fuegos LA, one wine immediately stood out, the Domaine Bousquet 2021 Gaia Malbec. Known for its depth and richness, Malbec can sometimes feel broad on the palate, but this expression offered something different: structure, texture, and elegance. That unexpected balance is exactly why the Domaine Bousquet 2021 Gaia Malbec is the Please The Palate wine of the week.
About Malbec
Malbec is a full-bodied red grape originally from southwest France, particularly the Cahors region, but it has become most famously associated with Argentina, where the grape thrives in high-altitude vineyards. In Mendoza, Malbec produces wines known for their deep color, dark fruit flavors such as plum and blackberry, and velvety texture. While often recognized for its richness, modern expressions of Malbec, especially those grown at elevation, can also show freshness, structure, and nuance. This versatility is part of what has made Malbec Argentina’s flagship variety and a favorite among wine lovers around the world.

About Domaine Bousquet
Domaine Bousquet was founded in 1997 by the Bousquet family, who brought their French winemaking heritage to Argentina’s high-altitude vineyards in Tupungato. From the beginning, the family committed to farming organically, clearing virgin land in the Gualtallary district of the Uco Valley and establishing vineyards at approximately 1,200 meters (4,000 feet) above sea level.
Today, Domaine Bousquet farms 172 hectares of estate vineyards certified organic, regenerative, and biodynamic, while also partnering with local growers who farm more than 300 hectares under certified organic practices. The winery has been organic for more than 27 years and was among the first wineries in Argentina to obtain Regenerative Organic Certification (ROC) status. Their philosophy centers on soil health, biodiversity, and long-term environmental stewardship, ensuring that the vineyard ecosystem remains balanced for generations to come.

The Gaia line takes its name from the Greek goddess of the earth, symbolizing the winery’s connection to nature and the belief that wines should reflect both the land and the energy of the environment in which they are grown. The grapes for the Gaia Malbec come from estate vineyards in Gualtallary, one of the most highly regarded subregions of the Uco Valley. This high-altitude desert climate provides ideal conditions for producing expressive, balanced wines.
Several natural factors define the character of the region. The high altitude contributes to intense sunlight and enhanced aromatics, and the cool nights preserve acidity and freshness. The dry climate reduces disease pressure, making organic farming more feasible, and the sandy, well-draining soils naturally limit vine vigor and encourage concentration. The constant Andean breezes help moderate the temperature and maintain balance. Combined, these conditions allow Malbec to develop depth and ripeness while retaining structure and elegance, qualities that were especially evident in this wine.

Tasting Notes
The Domaine Bousquet 2021 Gaia Malbec is made from 100% organically grown Malbec harvested by hand. The winemaking process focuses on preserving both fruit character and vineyard expression. The grapes underwent cold maceration for 72 hours, followed by a native fermentation over 12 days. There was extended maceration for 14 days, and then the wine was aged for 10 months in previously used French oak barrels. The neutral oak allows the fruit and structure of the wine to remain the focus while adding subtle complexity and texture.
The finished wine displays a deep violet color with aromas of ripe red and dark fruits layered with floral notes of violet. On the palate, it is structured and balanced, offering concentrated fruit supported by fine tannins and a persistent finish. What stood out most was the firm yet polished texture, creating a wine that feels both expressive and refined rather than broad or heavy.

Food Pairing
Malbec is a natural pairing with grilled meats such as steak, lamb, and pork. It also works well with richer poultry dishes, roasted vegetables, and dishes with savory spices. At the World Malbec Day event, Fuegos LA served charcuterie, cheese, beef skewers, and pizza. But the highlight was their traditional Argentine beef empanadas. The wine paired beautifully with the empanadas, highlighting how balanced acidity and structure can complement flavorful, comforting foods.

Where To Purchase
The Domaine Bousquet 2021 Gaia Malbec retails for approximately $20. To find the wine in a restaurant or retailer near you, search on the Domaine Bousquet website.
