Granville Offers a Little Bit of Everything for Everyone

If you are looking for somewhere to eat that will satisfy everyone, Granville is the answer. Looking for healthy food, they have it. Craving comfort food, they have it. Dining with someone with dietary restrictions, Granville’s menu has a lot of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes. And the best part, the food at Granville tastes really good. Granville currently has four locations. Burbank and Glendale have been open for almost a decade each. The Studio City location opened three years ago and one-and-a-half years ago, the West Hollywood location opened. I had been to the Studio City location a few times, as it is a favorite local spot of my parents. But I ventured to the West Hollywood location, located on the corner of Beverly Blvd where Jerry’s Deli stood for many years. And what a beautiful transition! The architecture is modern with concrete arches covering the windows. Inside, the space is large, open and bright with skylights that let the light flow in and live trees add a freshness to the space. There is also a large rectangular bar and outdoor seating. Granville is self-described as “all of the comfort and none of the guilt.” The ingredients are organic and almost everything is produced in-house. The menu can be a bit over-whelming at first. There are soups and salads, burgers and sandwiches, pastas, shareable plates and big plates, as well as side plates and dessert. With so many options, it is hard to make a choice. But, so far, in my experiences dining at Granville, you cannot go wrong. Butter Lettuce Cups are filled with mango, avocado, tomato, slaw. We added shrimp but you can add chicken, steak or tempeh. The lettuce cups come with lemongrass vinaigrette but we took our server’s recommendation and got a side of ponzu sauce and loved that as a dressing. Grilled Cheese Dipper is a grilled cheese sandwich made with petit basque, Gruyere, Parmesan, caramelized onions, mustard and garlic aioli. The sandwich is cut in quarters and served with a cup of tomato bisque. Chicken Noodle soup with organic chicken, 8-hour bone broth, orecchiette, carrots, green onion and shiitake matzoh balls caught my eye. While Granville is not a deli, the soup was rich and full of flavor and the texture of the matzoh ball was perfect, almost as good as my grandma’s was. The Artisan Flatbreads are served on thin crust whole wheat dough that had a nice soft texture. There is a bacon cheeseburger flatbread, a chicken & blue but we went with the veggie churrasco topped with grilled non-GMO vegetables, lime radicchio, smoked mozzarella, caramelized onions and cilantro. The salads, made with local and organic greens, come in full and half sizes. The Granville Salad is the signature salad and is similar to a Greek salad with cucumber, feta, kalamata olives, red onion, mint and lemongrass vinaigrette. The Caesar Salad is topped with a mound of shaved Parmesan and housemade croutons. The Uptown Mac & Cheese is found in the shareable section of the menu and is definitely something to share. It is rich and indulgent with  large macaroni noodles coated in aged cheddar, gruyere, chicken, asparagus and peas. With the added vegetables and protein, there is a little less guilt. From the big plates, the Rainbow Trout is one of the many meat, chicken, fish and vegetable options. The pepita crusted trout is pan-seared in a preserved lemon and butter pan sauce and served on top of grilled herb veggies. The portion is large but the dish is light and healthy with lots of flavor. To pair with the food, Granville has a nice selection of wines by the glass. There are approximately one dozen white wines and one dozen red wines available and most of the wines are from sustainable or organic wineries. There are wines from California, Italy, France, New Zealand, Germany and Argentina. With house-made ingredients, organic and local greens, antibiotic and hormone-free chicken, beef and salmon, non-GMO vegetables and cooking oil and no high fructose corn syrup, Granville truly offers something for everyone that can be enjoyed in good conscience.
