Grüner Veltliner translates to the “Green Wine of Veltlin”. Veltlin, now part of Valtellina, Italy, was an area in the lower Alps in the 1600s. While the grape’s origins are in northern Italy, Grüner Veltliner’s home today is in Austria. The flagship grape of Austria, Grüner Veltliner is an offspring of Traminer and the St. George grape. Seventy-Five percent of all Grüner Veltliner in the world is planted in Austria and one-third of all vines in Austria are Grüner Veltliner. Laurenz V (Five) Wines is based in the Kamptal region in Austria. Laurenz V Wines was created in 2004 by Laurenz Moser V, whose great-grandfather, Dr. Lorenz Moser III, was known as “Grandpa Gruner.” Moser partnered with Dieter Hubler and the Schweiger family to focus on producing world-class Gruner Veltliner with a contemporary twist. Today the winery is owned and managed by founding partners Dieter Huebler and Franz Schweiger and Peer Schweiger, Franz’s brother, has been the winemaker at Laurenz V since 2004.TASTING NOTES
Laurenz V. 2020 Charming Gruner Veltliner, Kamptal, Austria is made from a blending of up to 25 single vineyard sites in the Kamptal region. The grapes are grown in granite, gneiss, and mica-slate, as well as loess soils. Thanks to northerly cool air streams and diurnal temperature shifts between day and night, the grapes ripen slowly and retain freshness and fruitiness. The wine matures on the lees for 8-12 months before bottling. The wine has notes of apple, white pepper, and fresh bread. There is lots of crisp acidity and a long finish.FOOD PAIRING
Grüner Veltliner, with its acidity and spice, is a great pairing with creamy or fatty dishes. But it really is one of those grapes that can be paired with almost anything. Enjoy it with fried foods, fresh cheeses, seafood or vegetable pastas, roasted pork or veal, Vietnamese food, salads, vegetable dishes, and smoked fish.
