Please The Palate Wine of the Week: Fathers + Daughters Sarah’s Rustic Bubbles 2017

Father’s Day is coming. As a daughter, I would say that there is nothing like the bond between a father and daughter and that Fathers + Daughters is a multi-generational father and daughter winery in Mendocino. That is why the 2017 Fathers + Daughters Sarah’s Rustic Bubbles is the Please The Palate wine of the week. Fathers & Daughters Cellars was started by Guy and Sarah Pacurar, who are the owners of the Brewery Gulch Inn in Mendocino. Guy moved to Mendocino to buy an inn and he met Sarah. Sarah was connected to wine as she had helped start the Ferrington Vineyard in 1996 with her father Kurt Schoeneman. The Pinot Noir grapes grown in the Ferrington Vineyard are sold to notable wineries, such as William Selyem, MacPhail, Schramberg, Flowers, Saxon Brown Wines, Breggo Cellars and Arista. In 2012, Guy and Sarah’s daughter Ella was born. It was the birth of Ella that inspired them to start making wine. They purchased fruit from Sarah’s father, Kurt Schoeneman, and Ella was in a backpack on Guy’s back when they harvested their first grapes. This was the inspiration behind the label, Fathers + Daughters. It represents the collaboration between the Kurt and Sarah and Guy and Ella, as well as his older daughter Taylor. The wines produced by Fathers + Daughters are sourced from the Ferrington Vineyard. And one special wine is the Fathers + Daughters Sarah’s Rustic Bubbles, a pétillant naturel, or pétnat, named after Sarah who has a passion for sparkling wine. Pét-Nat is a sparkling wine produced in the méthode ancestral method. Unlike Champagne, Pét-Nat is not disgorged, and may or may not be filtered upon completion of fermentation. The 2017 Fathers + Daughters Sarah’s Rustic Bubbles is made from 100% Chardonnay. It is picked early, pressed and fermented in neutral French oak. The fermentation takes place in the bottle and it is not disgorged, nor is there a dosage or secondary fermentation. It is a cloudy lemon yellow color. The wine has delicate bubbles and aromas of fresh apples, tropical citrus, stone fruit and a touch of baked bread. The wine also has cidery characteristics and a mineral finish. Celebrate the bond between father and daughter with the 2017 Fathers + Daughters Sarah’s Rustic Bubbles which retails for $21.
