Please The Palate Wine of the Week: Covenant 2023 Landsman Cabernet Franc, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma

With Cabernet Franc Day approaching on December 4th, this week’s choice is a celebration of one of California’s most distinctive red grapes. The Covenant 2023 Landsman Cabernet Franc from Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma, delivers exotic aromas, ripe red fruit, and a subtle toastiness. It is a wine that is as intriguing as it is delicious, and that is why it is the Please The Palate Wine of the Week.

About Covenant Wines

Founded in 2003 by Jeff Morgan and Leslie Rudd, Covenant Wines blends artistry, passion, and a commitment to quality. Jeff Morgan, a former professional saxophonist trained at the French National Music Conservatory in Nice, discovered a love of wine while performing in Europe. After returning to the U.S., he worked at wineries, Wine Spectator, and Dean & DeLuca, where he met Leslie Rudd. Together, they set out to create exceptional kosher wines that could rival the finest non-kosher California offerings.

Tasting Notes

Cabernet Franc, one of the parent grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon, is prized for its aromatic, herbaceous profile and elegant structure. Covenant’s Landsman Cabernet Franc is fermented with native yeasts, undergoes natural malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels (16 months, 30% new), and is bottled unfiltered and unfined to preserve its purity. This wine highlights rich dark-red berries, plum, and blackberry with a gentle toasty overlay from oak aging. The wine is medium-bodied with layered tannins, juicy acidity, and a fresh finish.

Food Pairing

Cabernet Franc can be enjoyed with hearty fare, such as grilled meats, stews, and other flavorful dishes that can stand up to its structure and intensity. I choose to enjoy this wine with a hamburger and fries. Comfort food and this Cabernet France made for a perfect pairing.
