Those who collect Bordeaux wines know the allure and prestige of the names of places like Saint-Émilion, Médoc and Pauillac. For those who do not collect Bordeaux, those names may mean nothing more than expensive wine that is out of reach. But with the new Légende wines from Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), it is now possible to explore the different terroirs of these areas within Bordeaux at affordable prices.
Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) dates to 1865. Today, in addition to the two wineries in Bordeaux, they have invested in wineries in the south of France, Chile, Argentina, and now 30 hectares (74 acres) in China.
In the 1990s, they created the Collection Series, a range of wines from the four major Bordeaux French appellations (Bordeaux, Bordeaux Dry White, Médoc and Pauillac). Within the Collection Series, Légende was created in 2001.
As Christophe Salin, Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) president and CEO, explains, “It all started in the ‘90s. We wanted to offer our consumers a discovery of the different terroirs and tastes of Bordeaux. A name had to be found. A name that could live up to the expectations. A hint to the Rothschild family and the rich history of Château Lafite. A légende was born.”
Fifteen years after its inception, Légende has recently launched in the United States.
