05 Nov Please The Palate Wine of the Week: Peltier Schatz Family 2017 Teroldego, Estate Reserve, Lodi
Deep, bold, and layered, the Peltier Schatz Family 2018 Teroldego is a standout expression of a variety rarely seen outside Northern Italy. Sourced from two estate vineyards in Lodi’s heart and Clements Hills sub-AVA, this wine beautifully marries dark fruit, spice, and velvety oak, making the Peltier Schatz Family 2017 Teroldego, Estate Reserve, Lodi the Please The Palate Wine of the Week.
About Peltier Winery
Peltier Winery & Vineyards is a fourth-generation family operation in the Lodi Appellation of California. Founded in 2001 by Rodney Schatz and his wife Gayla, the winery grew from Rodney’s first 40 acres of Old Vine Zinfandel purchased in 1985 to over 1,000 acres of sustainably farmed vineyards producing 30,000+ cases annually.
Rodney’s journey began with vineyard management, custom harvests, and a dedication to high-quality fruit. When surplus grapes inspired the creation of their own label, the Peltier brand was born, winning accolades from the California State Fair and earning a reputation for excellence. Today, Rodney and his daughter Faryn continue the family tradition, crafting wines that reflect the character of Lodi’s soils, climate, and vineyards.
About Teroldego
Teroldego is a deep purple red grape native to Northern Italy, prized for its bold yet nuanced expression. In Lodi, the variety thrives in the warm south-facing vineyard near the winery, which brings out blackberry richness, while the cooler Clements Hills site adds black pepper and olive complexity. Aged for five years in new French oak, this Teroldego shows the balance, structure, and intensity that make it a unique and compelling wine to experience. This full-bodied, supple wine opens with rich blackberry and dark chocolate aromas, followed by layers of dried cranberry, black pepper, and vanilla. The wine is velvety and bold, with medium acidity and a lingering finish.
Food Pairing
Peltier Schatz Family Teroldego is a bold and rich wine that can stand up to intense flavors so I enjoyed the wine with a large barbecue beef rib and fries. The wine not only stood up to the meat but the acidity cut through the fat and the richness.
Where To Purchase
The Peltier Schatz Family Estate Reserve Teroldego retails for $50. If you visit the Peltier website, you can select different vintages of Teroldego as well.
