The New Bodrum of Turkey: 48 Hours in Alaçati

Cesme Peninsula

For my final two days in Turkey, I decided to hit the coast for a little rest and relaxation. Looking for somewhere that was a little less touristy, we came across Alaçati, located on the Çesme Peninsula near the Aegean Sea. If you are into windsurfing and kitesurfing, you have probably heard of Alaçati. It’s the new hotspot getaway for jetsetter Istanbulians, replacing the go-to beach town of Bodrum with Alaçati.

We arrived in Alaçati at the end of September—fortunately, just after the rush of summer had cleared out. The streets were quieter and the temperature was cooling down. It was the perfect time to explore the narrow streets filled with 100-year-old stone houses, boutique shops, and alfresco restaurants. Alaçati is an authentic Turkish town that is laid-back, easygoing, friendly and fun to explore on foot.

Check out my recommends for 48 hours in Alaçati. Read the complete story at Voyage Vixens.

48 Hours in Cappadocia, Turkey

Hot Air Balloon Ride, Cappadocia

Known for its unique moon-like landscape, underground cities, cave churches and houses carved in the rocks, 48 hours in Cappadocia is a whirlwind of wonder. The Göreme valley was shaped by ancient volcanic eruptions that eroded, leaving a landscape of cones, chimneys and mushrooms that reach up to 130 feet and speckle the land—like something out of a fairytale. Humans also contributed, carving caves for living quarters, tunnels, churches, storage areas and stables from the soft rock thousands of years ago (circa 1800-1200 B.C.).

Goin’ Underground

My first stop was at the Derinkuyu Underground, an ancient city that spans nearly 200 feet deep underground. I wandered deeper and deeper below, into another world that dates back to the 7th or 8th century B.C. It’s pretty amazing to think about centuries of peoples living in this fully functioning underground city that included wine and oil presses, stables, cellars, storage rooms and chapels with approximately 20,000 residents, as well as their livestock!

A Hipster’s Hideaway: Brown TLV Urban Hotel, Israel

After a long flight from Los Angeles to Tel Aviv, my friend and I arrived at midnight and went straight to The Brown TLV Urban Hotel. As we entered the former bank-turn-boutique-hotel, we looked at each other and said, “Did we fly to Israel or New York City?” From the uber-hipster décor to the trendy neighborhood, it was like we were in SoHo.

The eclectic lobby is filled with mid-century inspired furniture and a library of books. The walls were well-appointed with edgy art and photography, like the 1970’s floor-to-ceiling sized Playboy magazine covers.

After a good night’s sleep, we got up the next morning and headed out to take advantage of the hotel’s complimentary breakfast. Here’s the kicker: you get eat breakfast at one of five nearby cafes. With the list of the restaurants and map in hand, we chose Lulu Kitchen & Bar. Lulu was a charming little restaurant in the heart of the hip Neve Tzedek neighborhood. We sat inside the café and watched the young families and hipsters wander up and down the street as we enjoyed our Sunday brunch.
