The Holiday season is here! If you are looking to get into the spirit, head to Severance Wine Bar in West Hollywood for their Office Holiday Party Pop Up, inspired by everything from Planes, Trains, & Automobiles to The Office. Drinking Champagne and Sherry based cocktails, eating some sweets while surrounded by tacky holiday decorations make the Severance Office Holiday Party Pop Up the Please The Palate pick of the week.
Owner Evan Charest was laid off from a tech job on Christmas Eve in 2017. In 2018, he opened Severance Wine Bar with the severance money he received. And here we are at Christmas time again, so what is better than drinking cocktails inspired by the one of the worst yet funniest workplaces, Dunder Mifflin.
Through the month of December, the space next to Severance Wine Bar on Melrose Avenue has been converted into a tacky office holiday pop-up. Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, for $20++, you will get a complimentary cocktail or a sparkling wine flight. So get into the holiday spirit!
The cocktail offerings are all Champagne and Sherry based. Each is named after a Christmas themed movie that will test your trivia knowledge.
We all look forward to weekend brunch. It's that filling meal that can take up half the day as we sip on Mimosas or Bloody Marys and hang out with friends. But, my problem with brunch is that I can never decide what I want to eat. I am a fan of sharing lots of dishes so that I can enjoy a lot of flavors in a meal. And, at brunch where I have to pick between savory and sweet can be a challenge. But now I think I found my perfect brunch at Smoke.Oil.Salt.
Smoke.Oil.Salt. is known for serving authentic and traditional Spanish foods, meant to be shared, for dinner. And, now, under the guidance of Consulting Executive Chef Ricardo Zarate, they are offering brunch on Sundays from 11am-3pm. Tapas for brunch! With 12 selections on the menu, tapas style is perfect! As a party of two, we ordered 10 of the selections and had no problem eating every course! Overall, you cannot go wrong with any of the egg dishes. No matter how the eggs are prepared, they are perfect - light, fluffy and perfectly cooked. Our favorite dishes were:
Pan Tomate con Huevo de Mar (soft scrambled uni eggs, tomato toast, chili oil) - The scrambled eggs are fluffy and soft and almost melt in the mouth. The uni is not dominant but the saltiness comes through.
Cocktails made with wine? I have had wine based cocktails when the wine base is Port, Sake, Soju, but a cocktail made with Rose, Cabernet and other Greek varietals? My first reaction is that I am a purest when it comes to wine. I don't believe in adding ice cubes or coca cola to wine. But, while visiting Porto Carras, a winery and resort located in the north of Greece, an evening at Calma, the newest bar on property, I was pleasantly surprised with how beautifully the wine cocktails showcase the Porto Carras wines.
Bartender Dimitris Galanis is responsible for creating the wine cocktails at Bar Calma at Porto Carras. I met him on the day that he was promoted to supervisor for all of the bars on the resort property, including Bar Calma, two beach bars, and all of the main bars at restaurants in the hotel and marina. This is a well-deserved promotion as Dimitris has been honing his craft for the last eight years at Porto Carras, where he started as a barback, as well as spending the last five winter seasons working behind bars in Prague.
