There are more than 3500 wineries in California. That is a lot of wineries. Many of these wineries are small, family-owned businesses making anywhere from 500-5000 cases. At Please The Palate, owner Allison Levine loves to seek out these small producers and introduce them to friends through stories and events. Please The Palate is partnering with Chris Kern of Forgotten Grapes to bring you the best boutique wine bundle deals from California’s Central Coast every month! These are not wines that you will find at your local wine shop or restaurant.

November’s offering:

On Your Left Wine

4 red blends
$100 + tax ($143 value)

On Your Left Wine was founded in 2012 by former pharmacist and pharmaceutical sales rep Craig Lea and his wife Cristie. To say that Craig is an avid road cyclist would be an understatement, considering he named his winery “On Your Left”, gave all of his wines cycling-based names, featured a gear and a tire track in his logo, and has the audacity to feature himself on the About Us page of his website enjoying his wine in a pair of bike shorts. Fortunately, the shorts don’t reveal much, and the wines are expertly crafted and eminently drinkable.

All of Craig’s wines come from estate grapes grown on his property, the south-facing Two Hill Vineyard, just north of Creston Road in the El Pomar District of Paso’s east side. The Two Hill Vineyard, and Craig’s home (which also serves as his tasting room, since he doesn’t have a dedicated space), are flanked on all sides by vineyards from some of the biggest and top producers in Paso, so you know it’s great soil. Craig’s experience from the UC Davis Viticulture and Enology certificate program, and working with Kevin Jussila of kukkula, Carl Bowker of Caliza, and Leonard Gelfand of Gelfand Vineyards – a murderer’s row of all-star old-school Paso winemakers – means that his red blends are serious business.

November On Your Left four pack will include all red blends:

2014 “Beach Cruiser” Paso Robles Red Blend (62% Grenache/23% Counoise/15% Syrah; as smooth and easy to operate as its name implies, the 85% combined Grenache and Counoise being a delicious light fruitiness to the wine, while the Syrah adds chewiness and a long, full finish. Just like a real beach cruiser, you’ll be at your destination – in this case the bottom of the bottle – before you even know it; retails for $35)

2014 “Trackstand Reserve” Paso Robles Red Blend (63% Syrah/25% Grenache/12% Counoise; the flip-side of the Beach Cruiser, the big, bold Syrah of Trackstand hits you right up front with a spicy, peppery nose and tandem brambly fruit and blueberry flavors. The Grenache and Counoise sand down the Syrah’s rough edges and gift the wine a dry, lingering finish; retails for $38)

2015 “Echelon” Paso Robles Red Blend (41% Mourvedre/24% Syrah/24% Grenache/11% Counoise; built for both speed and power in the model of the great Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines where more really is better, the plurality of Mourvedre gives this wine a rugged, rustic feel with savory herbal, rhubarb, and meaty notes countered by the soft red fruits of the Grenache and Counoise; a true stunner that has amazing cellar potential and will only get better as each echelon passes; retails for $35)

2013 “Behind Bars” Paso Robles Red Blend (60% Zinfandel/20% Primitivo/20% Mourvedre; and now for something completely different…Primitivo is becoming more popular both as a stand-alone variety and one to blend with Zinfandel, but it’s likely you have never seen Zin and Primitivo blended with Mourvedre before! And it works! The richer, more barnyard notes of the Mourvedre playing off the bold, spicy, and fruity Zin with the intricacy of a 10-speed gearshift; retails for $35)

This is not a club and there is no commitment. Each month, a bundle of wines will be offered for a special price. If you are interested, you can order them. If not, don’t. It’s first-come, first-served and we do things in twelves; the wines are only be available to the maximum first 24 people to contact me. Once we hit 12, then 24 people committed for that bundle, I’ll take your credit card and delivery information and will charge your card. If you live in Southern California, delivery is FREE and will be personally delivered to you (contactless). If you live beyond Southern California, wines can be shipped – $25 in California and $30 outside of California to Western States (AZ, NV, OR, ID). Additional states, please contact us. You will also be invited our virtual tasting with the owner and winemaker on Thursday, November 11th.
