As I visit more and more vegan restaurants, I feel the need to declare that I am not a vegan.....not even close. But, I say this because despite my love for dairy and meat, I continue to enjoy the meals I am having at vegan restaurants. And, Sun Cafe in Studio City is no exception.
Sun Cafe has been in existence for five years. The first location, which they still own, is small and was more suited to prepared food-to-go. But, in their new larger location on Ventura Blvd, near Vineland, Sun Cafe is housed in a former 1920's duplex. The space is bright and open and radiates freshness with lots of seating.
I guess I have to give thanks to the hoards of paparazzi that were hovering outside Gracias Madre or else I may have driven right by the simple white building with modest signage. Of course, I had to drive around the block a few times as parking is a major challenge on Robertson Blvd.
Once I got a parking space and walked past the paparazzi, I entered Gracias Madre.....a spacious, inviting space with high ceilings, great natural light and a large outdoor patio. It actually felt like dining at someone's home; there was a casualness and comfort to the modern Mexican design.
When I was invited to check out the new restaurant Crossroads, in the old Philippe space on Melrose, I was told two things. First, Beverage Director Jeremy Lake is doing the cocktails (Jeremy worked at Rivera and Playa previously and I was excited to check out his new place). Second, it's a vegan restaurant.
I love my vegetables but I especially love cheese, butter, ice cream.....and of course, meat. So naturally I was a bit hesitant about going out to dinner at a vegan restaurant. Would I be satisfied with the flavors? Well, as a proud omnivore, I must say, if I hadn't been told, I would never have known that Crossroads was a vegan restaurant. The cocktails were excellent as was the food (and very satisfying).
