Wines labels tell us about a wine. But the Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino label tells us a story. And that story has been brought to life in a one-woman play entitled "As Wine Flows By". The story is about the Malbec grape and its journey through the centuries as represented by four female figures. It is the story of a grape, of a family and of a wine and you can read about it as I wrote in the Napa Valley Register and share here. A wine label can tell us a lot about the wine inside. It tells us who the producer is, what grape(s) are in the wine, and where it was produced. The back label might describe what the wine tastes like or tell a story about the vintage, the harvest, or something quirky and humorous. The label of Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino tells a story. It tells a story of the wine, of the Catena family and of the Malbec grape.
One of the most well-known names of Argentine wine is Susana Balbo. She has made a significant impact in the wine industry and now her son, Jose Lovaglio Balbo is following in her footsteps. I had the pleasure to meet him recently on a visit to Los Angeles where he shard his story, and his family's story, as well as his wines, as I wrote in my column in the Napa Valley Register and share here. If you have ever had a Torrontes from Argentina, there is a good chance that you drank Crios from Susana Balbo, one of the foremost winemakers in Argentina.
“Crios” means “offspring” and Susana Balbo created the wine in honor of her children José and Ana.
An entry level wine, the Torrontes is fresh and crisp with aromas of white peach, grapefruit and white flowers on the nose and bright acidity and minerality on the palate.
Recently Martín Kaiser, Winemaker at Doña Paula in Argentina, and Sebastián Labbé, Winemaker at Carmen Wines, in Chile visited Santa Monica on a hot summer day to showcase their wines. Overlooking the ocean, it was a treat to meet these men and taste their wines that showcase the best their neighboring countries have to offer. 9233482655_9bb3de27fd 9233455491_88f0958a58 ARGENTINA 9233474691_c3950f0568
