Duke’s Spirited Cocktails, Healdsburg

Written by Allison Levine on June 24, 2016
Cocktails

Healdsburg, the small wine town in the north of Sonoma, is home to a little more than 10,000 people and a lot of wineries. It is also now home to a new cocktail bar that officially opened Thursday, June 23, 2016. I was lucky to be in town last night when Duke’s Spirits Cocktails opened.

Duke's

Duke’s is located on the main plaza of Healdsburg in a space that has been open since the end of prohibition in 1933. What was most recently a local dive bar is now a modern mixology bar owned and run by three former Spoonbar bartenders, Laura Sanfilippo, Tara Heffernon, and Steve Maduro.

Laura Sanfilippo, Tara Heffernon, and Steve Maduro

On opening night, the room was packed with locals from far (Santa Rosa) and near (Healdsburg) who were excited to check out the new space. It is a rectangular space with a long bar on one side, couches and tables on the other, and lots of standing room in between.

The menu consists of drinks made with garden ingredients. The herbs and flowers come from Heffernon’s garden and the fresh fruits and vegetables are from Sanfilippo’s orchard and vineyard.

Heading to Sonoma for the weekend? Be sure to stop by for a cocktail when you need a break from wine. But if you still want wine, or beer, Duke’s has a small, curated list of local products.

California Wine Trips You Should Go On This Summer (That Aren’t Napa)

Written by Allison Levine on April 27, 2016
Lifestyle Wine

If you live in Cali and like wine, sure, you’re gonna go to Napa. But here’s the thing: Napa makes up only one percent of the grapes grown in California — our state actually has over 137 AVAs (American Viticultural Areas) that stretch as far north as Mendocino County and as far south as Riverside County, so if you’re looking to go wine tasting/stumbling for the weekend, your choices are actually (almost) endless. Some are better than others, though — and here are eight regions worth a visit:

Wine Country

Healdsburg, Sonoma
Sebastopol, Sonoma
Monterey, California
Paso Robles
Pismo Beach
Santa Barbara Wine Country
Downtown Santa Barbara
Malibu

Read about each region and the complete story at Thrillist.

Weekend Getaway: Wine Tasting in Sonoma

Written by Allison Levine on August 19, 2013
Travel Lifestyle Wine

One of my favorite weekend getaways is to Sonoma. Making Healdsburg the home base, it is centrally located between the Dry Creek Valley (known for Zinfandel) and the Russian River Valley (known for Pinot Noir). With two days in the area, spend a day in each valley, but if you have more time, it’s even better!  Here are some of my favorite wineries to visit:

Russian River Valley

Arista Winery
7015 Westside Road, Healdsburg, CA 95448

If you are looking for a divine Russan River Valley Pinot Noir, then look no further than Arista Winery. Founded by the McWilliams family in 2002, they have dedicated themselves to working with local growers and practice sustainable farming. Beyond amazing wines, the vineyard boasts beautiful Japanese water gardens, mountain and vineyard vistas and a traditional tasting room. The tranquil environment is perfect for picnics, gatherings and intimate tastings.
Hours: Mon-Sun 11am-5pm
