Two Couples, Two Wineries, Two Stories

Peter and Rebecca Work, Ampelos Cellars

Wayne and Kara Fingerman, Hard Six Cellars

Both Peter and Rebecca and Wayne and Kara left corporate jobs in New York to make wine in California. Peter and Rebecca landed in Sta. Rita Hills in Santa Barbara County and Wayne and Kara landed in Napa Valley. Two couples, two wineries, two stories.

Ampelos Cellars

In 1999 Peter and Rebecca Work purchased 82 acres in what would later become the Sta. Rita Hills appellation (Santa Rita Hills in California is legally Sta. Rita Hills), and named it “Ampelos,” the Greek word for vine. The name has a two-fold purpose. First, they believe that all great wines start in the vineyard. Secondly, they have close ties with Greece; they were married there and own a small bed & breakfast, called Ampelos Resort, on the island of Folegandros. They bought the land with dreams of someday watching the nightly sunset over the hills and their dogs running through the vines.

Ampelos produces approximately 5,000 cases per year, with a focus on growing organic grapes and creating well-crafted wines. Their methods combine a respect for tradition and openness to innovation, keeping the wine making methods as natural as possible and free of harsh chemicals. All the extra grape skins, stems, seeds, and lees are composted, and they hand punch-down our wines to minimize use of electricity. In fact, they absorb more CO2 than we produce.

  • 2019 Viognier Phi
  • 2015 Pinot Noir Rho (barrel select)
  • 2016 Syrah Gamma

Hard Six Cellars

Kara and Wayne met in Central Park through their dogs Bella and Ty (the physical embodiment of the Meanmouth!).  Not long afterwards, they moved west to pursue their passion for wine. Today, Hard Six Cellars is a fueled by a vision of winemaking that puts the land first.  Jess, Keisha & Maya are often also present, earning us the nickname “Los Lobos” amongst the vineyard workers.

Kara and Wayne have a mutual appreciation for abstract and “outsider” art.  The works chosen for the Hard Six labels have enormous depth and are extremely evocative, risky, and captivating in nature. There is risk involved in choosing vineyards that are more challenging, but that is what Hard Six connotes – a high risk, high reward proposition. We are passionate believers in our efforts. Sometimes this means a passionate debate or two along the way…but always over a glass of wine, of course.

  • 2017 Seated Cloud Sauvignon Blanc
  • 2016 Seven Pillars Syrah
  • 2015 Meanmouth Cabernet Sauvignon

Each tasting is $500 and includes 3 wines. Sign up for one or both. Either way, you can stay for the entire Zoom tasting.

About GO Campaign:

GO Campaign invests strategically in solution oriented, community-based and under-funded organizations that address the root causes of problems affecting vulnerable youth. GO Campaign identifies deserving local heroes throughout the world and partners with these organizations to provide children and young adults with critical services, resources and needed opportunities. The GO Campaign works with a number of local Los Angeles area grassroots “heroes” who run programs that give opportunities to vulnerable children and youth (under age 25). There are a variety of LA programs that GO has vetted, works with and gives grants to that benefit children in our community. It is these LA area programs/grantees that Vintage Hollywood will support.
