Boutique Wineries Off the Beaten Path

William Allen, Two Shepherds, Sonoma

Scott Flora, Native Flora, Willamette Valley

Meet William Allen of Two Shepherds in Sonoma and Scott Flora of Native Flora in the Willamette Valley, two boutique wine producers who march to the beat of their own drums. While they balk trending terms like sustainable, organic, biodynamic and natural, both manage their vineyards and wine production with the utmost care and minimal intervention. These are two wineries that you will not find in retail stores or on most restaurant lists but are wonderful word of mouth finds!

Two Shepherds

Two Shepherd’s philosophy is to embrace how wines were made for hundreds of years before the introduction of chemicals and flavor manipulation. We guide our wines along, protect them from harm, and otherwise do not intervene. This old-world style allows for the true expression of the variety, vintage and vineyard.

All of the wines are aged in neutral barrels that subtly enhance the wines’ texture but impart no oak flavors. The wines are fermented naturally with native yeast, are aged on the lees, with minimal sulfur and are minimally racked. We focus on uncommon Rhône varieties, often from the only few acres available in California. While the total production is small, the offerings are vast. Nicknamed ‘insane master of small lots’, William crafts about 15 different wines each vintage, including some that are only 1 – 2 barrels.

  • 2019 Pinot Gris Ramato
  • 2019 Vermentino
  • 2016 Old Vine Mourvedre

Native Flora

Native Flora is a small, secluded vineyard and winery hidden high in the famed Dundee Hills. Founded in 2005, we strive to produce premium estate wines in limited quantities for people who enjoy great wine, a good laugh, natural beauty and a more personal wine experience.

The earth, the vineyard, the people, the flora and fauna, the buildings, the rain – everything that exists on our 33-acre site – work in harmony to grow great grapes and produce fine wine. Their entire wine life, from farming to sales is rooted in intelligent integration. When you set foot upon the estate, you have literally walked into that life.

Despite the inherent exclusivity of our diminutive size, we remain down to earth, hospitable, and enthusiastic about sharing our chosen path in life. It is highly likely that one or both of the proprietors will be on hand to host your visit. Their aim is to enlist you not just as a customer, but as a new friend and fellow enthusiast of good wines and places.

  • 2016 Heretic – Estate North Slope Pinot Noir
  • 2016 Jaguar – Estate Reserve Pinot Noir
  • 2016 The One – Estate Uber Reserve

Each tasting is $500 and includes 3 wines. Sign up for one or both. Either way, you can stay for the entire Zoom tasting.
