Presented by the Japanese Food Culture Association, the Japanese Food Expo returned to the Universal Hilton Hotel to showcase Japanese food and culture through tastings, demonstrations and workshops. More than 50 exhibitors were in attendance. From savory to sweet and from sake to beer, the Japanese Food Expo showed that there is more to Japanese food than sushi. I was invited to attend the trade portion of the event, which took place during the day and was able to get around the expo and taste everything and find some favorites.
When I travel to New York for work, I typically stay at a hotel near where the event I am working will take place. This past week, I was in New York for a wine event that we decided to do in The Beekman, a Thompson Hotel, in Manhattan's Financial District, within walking distance to the World Trade Center and the Brooklyn Bridge. I decided to stay there as well for the convenience. I had seen photos on the internet and read about it but nothing could prepare me for The Beekman. It is one of the most magnificent hotels I have ever stepped foot into and hence it is the Please The Palate pick of the week. From the moment my car pulled up to the doors, I was greeted by a bellman who grabbed my bags. Check-in at registration was friendly and quick and then I was escorted to my room by a friendly young man, JB, who marveled at the beauty of the hotel with me, even though he looks at it every day.
Who does not like french fries? What's not to love about the perfect salty snack that can be enjoyed anytime!? There are steak fries, shoestring fries, curly fries, crinkle fries and so many other shapes and sizes. Fries can be salted or spiced. They can be served as a side dish or poutin. Fries can be dipped in ketchup, bbq sauce, ranch dressing, truffle aioli, vineagar and more. I thought I had seen it all until I enjoyed a french fry smorgasbord that was pure french fry madness. And where was this? At Fry Madness in downtown Los Angeles. It is fair to assume that Fry Madness is a fast casual restaurant where you might order at the counter and take a seat. But, Fry Madness, a small restaurant with approximately 20 seats, is a full-service restaurant. Take a seat and the server will give a menu and then take your orders. The only catch is that every single thing on the menu is french fries!
